Jen's Journal

Dear dedicated TIG Toronto members,

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

TIG Summer 2001 is almost over!! These past few months have been incredible. We have accomplished so MUCH together!!!
I am proud to be part of such a dynamic, talented, motivated team. Each person has a special something that I fully value and appreciate. The impact that we have had as a group of dedicated individuals and as an organization is beyond what we may know or realize at this point in time.

This Friday, from 12:00 - 5:00pm I want to spend some time reflecting on what everyone has learned, accomplished and realized so far at TIG! I want to hear your STORIES!!! I also think that it is a great opportunitity for us to talk about next steps and future goals.

Along the lines of future goals, I think that it is important for everyone to receive a formal letter of recognition (for resume purposes etc.) ESPECIALLY since we now have really great letterhead! This does not represent the end to people's involvement with TIG, but rather a MILESTONE in each of our personal and professional lives! It is definitely worth getting down on paper :)

Alongside with your letters, I need documention on how TIG has changed/affected your life. As of now, we only have funding to pay for Nordine and Derek as of September 1, 2001. I am talking to Career Edge about them sponsoring more $$$ but they need to hear WHY working at TIG is so unique, valueable, innovative, incredible for people's lives! We need 'testimonials' for the Sponsorship Packages and Grant Applications that we are developing so the time has come for each TIG member to TELL THEIR STORY!!!

What should this include?

1) how has TIG inspired you?
who/what was inspiring?
how did you act on that inspiration?

2) what did TIG inform you about that you wouldn't otherwise know about?
what have you learned??

3) what initiatives were you involved with while at TIG?
what were/are your goals?
what did you accomplish?

4) what is your vision for TIG?

5) what skills have you gained that you feel will help you succeed in the future?

6) what have your most memorable experiences been while at TIG?

7) how has TIG had an impact on your views and perspectives about the world?

8) how have you grown as a person since you first got involved with TIG?

9) who have you helped and what kind of impact do you think that you've had while working/volunteering at TIG?

*********************************************
Please send your 'story' to both Derek and
I by Thursday so that we can encorporate
some of your feedback into your reference letter!

Warmest regards,

Big hugs,

Jennifer :)

a big hug goes a long way!

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

this is will :)

he is a brilliant child that i met at the Human Issues conference in Silver Bay. He overhead someone say my name as I sat down for dinner and moments later, he said 'jennifer? do you want a chip?'

it was soo sweet! he came across the table to share his chips with me and i was fully impressed.

will is special. he's got great powers - you can tell just by looking at his eyes.

There was another kid that I met at the Human Issues conference who was about 8 years old. his name was David. We hung out by the fire and raced across an acre of grass!

i'm not sure why, but i notice that i am intuitively drawn to children. i love to play, laugh, dance and draw with them. it's a wonderful thing, to be trusted and loved by a child. this picture is a great reminder of that feeling of fulfillment and awe!

thanks for the hug :)

...tag - you're it!

following up!!

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

here i am, at my computer - typing up notes from past conversations, sending out e-mails to people that i've met at past conferences and events, printing out research that i've found from various sites on the internet, looking for new projects and initiatives to get involved with...gaining new perspective, strength and clarity.

it was nice to sleep in for a change!

it's also nice to work at home - in a quiet environment - on a saturday - catching up - while the world rests...(even if the rest of the world isn't resting)...

The past few months at TIG have been very exciting for me! Each day, new and interesting members join, different people are affected by our efforts in really powerful ways, my mind is challenged, my inspiration is tested and my ideas are expressed in new and innovative ways!

there is so much to do - in so little time - which can be really exciting and overwhelmint at the same time...

i guess i just want to say that i'm really happy about the way things are progressing. it's challenging...but worth the ride!

Welcoming and Explaining

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

As people started to arrive to the workshop -- I was a bit stressed out (because I WAS a bit LATE!!) This is a BIG NO NO...don't be late for the workshop that you're hosting!

good thing tracey came early :)

Basically, as soon as i got there i worked as quickly as possible trying to set things up.

I handed out name tags, set up the markers, wrote the 'theme' of our workshop on big chart paper, got different participants involved with helping to set up and tried to stay cool...

Tracey was great at welcoming people, staying calm and keeping a warm smile on her face!

Just before we started, tracey used my rainmaker (the one I got in Mexico) to help shift the energy from preparation to readiness. Everyone was seated in a circle and Tracey stepped into the centre to explain the process of Open Space.

As she spoke, she walked slowly around the circle on the inside, making eye contact with each participant.

She reminded us of our topic and format and explained the following:

The Law of Two Feet: If, during the course of the gathering, any person finds him or herself in a situation where they are neither learning nor contributing, they must use their two and go to a more productive place)

Butterflies: Are people who stand around looking beautiful and don't spend much time in the actual groups can add a lot of value in the side conversations that they have

Bumblebees Are people who fly from group to group and may be cross pollinating ideas from one group to the other

Both of these types of personalities are quite natural in the format, and are real helps to the overall process.

After explaining the laws of Open Space, we all went into the centre of the circle and wrote down statement that we were passionate about, that related the the theme of 'how to inspire, inform and involve youth locally and globally'

We then placed our paper on the wall within the grid of times and locations that the discussions would take place around the room. This gives them a time and location for their mini-workshop.

Tracey made it clear that the 'host' of the workshop did not need to be an expert on the topic or statement that they write, they just need to be passionate enough about it to want to 'host' the group of people that show up and also want to talk about it, and to take notes for the group on the flipcharts.

This was our schedule for the day!!

being a workshop coordinator vs. being the facilitator

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Seeing as I was not an expert on Open Space Technology - I decided to invite someone who has experience in the area to lead the workshop (Tracey Erin Smith - www.traceyerinsmith.com)

I found this to be quite effective as it allowed me to fully participate and experience Open Space - rather than be stressed about how to run it!

I am now confident that I will be able to effectively FACILITATE such a workshop in the future!!

building up to the event...

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Just a note about the TIG events system -- WOW!! it rocks :)

Since I posted my workshop on the TIG events database, people interested in attending were able to RSVP to let me know whether or not they planned on attending the event:
http://www.takingitglobal.org/action/event.html?eventid=293

* members are also able to post comments on the discussion board and write reviews!!

Thanks to Mike and Derek for the great ideas and development on this :)

Getting Started...

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Open Space is a good format for brainstorming ideas and coming up with solutions to challenges being faced.

I chose the theme 'How to inspire, inform and involve youth locally and globally' because this is a great way for TIG to re-look at our current programs and initiatives in a way that may help enhance or improve our outlook and impact!

I invited core team members that have been involved with TIG along with all other members who have signed up on the TIG website from across Ontario. If you want to e-mail all TIG members in your e-mail - ask mfurdyk@takingitglobal.org to send an automated e-mail!!
I also invited friends and young family members to participate in this open forum.

Supplies/Resources Needed
- Medium to large room (we had a fairly large room where we were able to sit on the floor in a large circle, and break out into small groups with a lot of wall space!)
- Several large pieces of blank paper (we had flip chart paper and many small sheets of cut-up paper for notes)
- Several markers in dark colors (CRAYOLA!!!)
- Masking tape (we also had that 'tack' stuff that let's you stick paper to the wall)
- Flip charts (one for each break out group)

why Open Space Technology?!

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

What is it? (taken from: http://www.openspaceworld.org/english/openspace.html)

Open Space Technology is one way to enable all kinds of people, in any kind of organization, to create inspired meetings and events. Over the last 15 years, it has also become clear that opening space, as an intentional leadership practice, can create inspired organizations, where ordinary people work together to create extraordinary results with regularity.

In Open Space meetings, events and organizations, participants create and manage their own agenda of parallel working sessions around a central theme of strategic importance, such as: What is the strategy, group, organization or community that all stakeholders can support and work together to create?

With groups of 5 to 1000 -- working in one-day workshops, three-day conferences, or the regular weekly staff meeting -- the common result is a powerful, effective connecting and strengthening of what's already happening in the organization: planning and action, learning and doing, passion and responsibility, participation and performance.
