Buddhism
Based on and developed from one man's search for meaning and purpose in life. That man was Siddhartha Guatama, an Indian prince, who gave up his life of ease to look for true happiness and meaning. He acquired this by following a 'middle way' rather than extreme asceticism. Having achieved enlightenment, the Buddha, as he became known, established the first Buddhist community (sangha). Buddhism doesn't present itself as a revealed religion, and doesn't believe in a personal deity.

Christianity
Based on the life and teaching of Jesus of Nazareth, who Christians believe to be the Messiah of the Jewish tradition. After beginning as a group within Judaism, the Christian church became distinct and spread throughout the Roman empire. This empire became divided into two parts (east and west) and a different form of Christianity governed each. Following the development of Islam, the church in the east became a religious minority, whilst in the west it became the dominant faith centred around the bishop of Rome, the Pope. In the 16th century, Henry VIII broke away from the Pope's control and created the Church of England.

Hinduism
Hindus believe in one God who takes many forms. The concept of dharma - or "duty" - is central to Hindu life. The dharma of human beings is service to the divine throughout the whole of life. Hindus also believe that we are part of the eternal spirit - or atman - which is without beginning or end. In each life, the atman makes good or bad action (karma). The present life is affected by previous lives, and will also affect future ones as the atman passes from one to the other. The ultimate goal of all living beings is to find liberation from the cycle of birth and death, and realise the union of the atman with Brahman - the supreme being or universal spirit.

Islam
The word "Islam" literally means "peace through willing obedience to Allah's divine guidance". It teaches that there is one god (Allah) and that Muhammed (meaning peace and blessings be upon him) is the prophet of god. The revelations which Muhammed received from Allah are recorded in the Qur'an (the holy scriptures) which forms the basis for Muslim life and living. The essentials of Muslim belief and practice are summarised in the "Five Pillars of Islam". These include a declaration of faith in the one god (Allah) and his prophet (Muhammed), prayer (salat) five times a day, and fasting during daylight hours throughout the month of Ramandan (the ninth month of the Islamic calendar).

Judaism
Jews believe in one god, the creator and lord of the universe, who has a special relationship - the Covenant - with the Jewish people. They trace their ancestry back to Abraham, the first of the patriarchs. After fleeing Egypt, the Jews wandered in the desert until they came to Mount Sinai. God called Moses to the mountain top and gave him the Torah: the first five books of the Bible containing rules for the people to live by. The most important of these are known as the Ten Commandments.

Sikhism
The Sikh dharam (way of life) centres upon the teachings of the ten Gurus. The first of these - Guru Nanak - was born in the fifteenth century. The tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, decreed that after his death there were to be no more human gurus. Instead, their holy book - the Guru Granth Sahib - was to become their living guru. Sikhs believe that a soul exists from the time of its creation until the time at which it is re-absorbed into god. Until then, it remains on the cycle of birth and death. Karma (actions and their consequences) determines whether a person will achieve liberation from the cycle of rebirth (mukti).
