i've always wondered...where ideas come from?

many say that they ideas aren't new...that most ideas have been thought of before...

whether original or reinvented...

where do ideas come from?

I believe an idea is a rare gift that allows us to communicate with others and express ourselves even if we are not conscious we are doing it. They are the bases for social interaction.

Ideas come from your surroundings...then stored in the mind and eventually expressed vocally or physically.

It's like asking how do we come to know things? Through other people, through education but in the end those conversations..lectures..concepts are all stored at the back of our mind and expressed only every so often (or every day depending if ur name is jen;)) thatz why its a rare gift. derekmartin Derek Martin

I think that if you mix eggs and milk, somehow you get an omelette, although that "omelette-ness" didn't exist in either the egg or the milk.

Similarly, if you mix 1 part experience with 2 parts thought, and a dash of inspiration, you will end up with an idea. Sure, ideas may be based on other ideas, but new ideas do happen. For myself, my 'new ideas' usually come when I've been reading a lot of different books at the same time... My mind puts the pieces together, relating facts from here and there, and comes up with something new using the information that it has gathered along the way....

Are 'concepts' the same as ideas though? I mean the concept of 'transportation vehicle' remains constant, but if someone came up with a completely-wacky never-done-before idea for a vehicle, i'm sure that would classify as a "new idea"....

:P...no,,,that's a brilliant (!) analogy...*impressed.

I think every single thing we do is based on a past experience.....from taking
a step (so we can walk down Yonge St.) to saying "hi" to flying a jet!

I was "battling" with the thought of...how do "new" things develop..if my theory
says everything is "old" (so to speak)...but Derek answered that PERFECTLY!

Yes...ideas are incredible things...perhaps too much for us to truly analyze. alexius Alex Apostol
