Ottawa Update:

These past few days in Ottawa have been intense and jam-packed with meetings, along with focused hours of writing the brochure and responding to e-mails.

Friday January 25:
------------------

CIDA - Mike and I met with the Director of Youth Action to talk about a proposal that was submitted several months ago. He has a friendly personality and is definately interested in TIG. He was impressed with our progress - and that I will be working with the past President of CIDA next week at the Youth Employment Summit Organizing Committee meetings. He had a lot of broad questions - vs. proposal specific questions. In terms of next steps - he said that he had a lot to think about...The good news is that we got him to put a TIG sticker on the side of his laptop (great view for those who go into his office) - and rather than spending an hour with us - we ended up chatting for 2 hours!! We picked up CIDA documents and have a lot of reading to do in terms of gaining a fuller understanding of their current programs.

Youthfluence - We met with Jennifer McCarthy - who is coordinating www.youthfluence.org (an initiative of the Institute on Governance). She talked to us about the progress their team as made - and more importantly, the challenges that they have faced. They were dependent on 'potential' incoming money from the Government Online initiative - and last-minute, the gov. pulled out - after about 6-9 months went by. Rather than work on development / promotions / building the community while waiting for funding and submitting proposals - progress was halted - and now they pretty much have to start over. This is a great lesson - in terms of not being too dependent on the funding that 'may' come through proposals.

Jr. Chamber Alumni - We had dinner with Jr. Chamber members that are now alumni (over 40) and talked about our 'global coordination / organizational structure' challenges. We asked for their advice and perspecitves on how we should structure TIG --> they are convinced that our greatest value is in our online community - and the fact that we are combining 'social entrepreneurship' / 'innovation' / education and community involvement. They talked a bit about what resources JC provides when new chapters are formed - I am trying to get a hold of those materials...Mike and I are going to have a follow-up meeting with a JC International Vice President in a few weeks. We are going to explore the possibility of helping JC in developing a global technology strategy - to allow for greater communication and collaboration among JC members...

Saturday January 26:
--------------------

Canadian Post-Secondary Student Leadership Conference - Mike and I spoke at the Gala dinner and connected with young people who are 'leaders' across canada. We involved them in sharing their perspectives about leadership and talked about how fostering leadship is an essential part of TIG. Many people were inspired by what was said through the dialogue that we encouraged -- because delegates came up to the microphone and made powerful statements about what they had learned. I have asked their conference organizing committee to write a 'thank you' letter to TIG for having us speak :)

Meeting with University of Carleton Students - we met with 2 students who are organizing a conference for engineering students - that want to expand thier reach next year. They had many questions for me - about why TIG exists, how it got started, what it means to be a member, how we help young people who have social action ideas etc. They may be interested in starting a TIG team in Ottawa...

Sunday / Monday
---------------

Deal.org / RCMP Discussions - We met with the Director of RCMP's National Youth Strategy. We made a presentation today - after meeting with the Deal.org team all day yesterday and all day today. There are a lot of potential areas for collaboration that include the following:
- Server Hosting (Deal - is buying a 22,000 server and may host TIG for free // TIG may do server admin for deal)
- TIG may develop and provide a content management system for deal (to fuel their 'online zine')
- Deal and TIG may develop joint-funding proposals for 'youth engagement' and 'crime prevention through social development' programs
- YouCAN! Conflict Resolution conference in Toronto, Deal has a booth and has offered TIG to use 1/2 of the booth
- Discussion about joint-marketing/promotion opportunities
- TIG may develop the 'membership/login' system for deal.org * i have put together a basic quote for the technology development involved
- TIG can work with Deal to involve youth in advising on the RCMP's National Youth Strategy - through helping to facilitate local workshops / youth consultations being conducted across Canada
- The launch of this initiative would take place at an upcoming event here in Ottawa called 'Encounters of Canada'

* further details about partnership specifics will be provided in the future :)

TIG Brochure - during the late hours of the night - and early hours of the morning, i have been writing / re-writing the content for the brochure (that vanessa and i drafted last week) which will be given to CEO's of the world's largest companies, Directors of the worlds largest NGO's, Princes of countries, UN ambassadors etc. etc. I have sent the final draft -- amanda has been incredibly patient and committed to designing the brochure...mandy - thank you for being so reliable.
