Queen Rania helps to challenge stereotypes on YouTube

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

I'd like to invite TakingITGlobal members to engage in a discussion with Queen Rania from Jordan about stereotypes about the Arab World and the Middle East from now until August 12 (International Youth Day)! This initiative is a catalyst for youth to reflect on misconceptions they may hold in their own minds and to participate in an exchange of combating misunderstandings.

In my personal experience working with many Arab youth throughout the TIG community and traveling to countries such as Jordan, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, I have been able to challenge pre-existing stereotypes of my own through the kindness and open hearts of the many people I have connected with. It is sad that negative perceptions are so heavily influenced and shaped by the many images portrayed in the media.

Utilizing online social networking tools can provide avenues for people to challenge perceptions and engage in a meaningful exchange. That said, we still need to be open minded and willing to be wrong. We need to be willing to both accept and embrace what we do not understand - and perhaps even fear. We must be curious and willing to ask questions with the ability to question our own assumptions.

Learn more about Queen Rania's efforts to combat stereotypes on YouTube.

Over the years , we on the side of the world have always believed that Arabs or people from the Middle East are violent.

That their as pretty as they can't be married by Christians.
Also we hear stories that most citizens there are sucide bombers.

Also my personal experience with a jordanian was sometime last year, he is the owner of a big hotel and i booked for hotel to visit Jordan, upon knowing my nationality he categorically insulted me and said he doesn't want to have anything with me.

Its a bitter experience and have always seen the average Arab man as a racist and violent person.

I am so interested in the topic. I never really associated violence with the Arabs or the Moslems. My images of the Arab world are always associated with Oasis, dates, dessert, Egypt and Sphinx, Jasmine and Aladdin and all those nice images.

It is just recently that violent and biased misconceptions are attached to them but I don't think so. There are violent men in any religion but yes, I think we need to learn more about them to understand them.

June 1, 2008 | 3:43 PM one more step for the light
i am very interested in fighting stereotypes because i consider that those wrong jugements are like walls separating peoples and this is a pity because like this we can miss a very good opportunity to get in touch with great people. and even if i had a bad expirience with someoen this doen't mean that every one else in his country is bad . the "good" and "bad" exist every where. i am tolerant and i hate stereotypes and i take my time to know poeple and bild my own idea about them .

June 5, 2008 | 11:09 AM Combatting stereotypes
This is more my own person account of pre-existing stereotypes. For many years, I lived in Istanbul, Turkey and although Turkey is not considered the "heart" of the Arab world for many it is still considered to be a part of the Middle East. I also had the chance to travel throughout the Middle East and live in Dubai later on in life. During my time there I have never experienced such generousity.

For me, I find it so sad when I come across people asking me questions like did I feel safe there or do you have to cover yourself up? I believe that is always important to have a curious mind, but for some reason I always feel as though people have made up their minds about what that part of the world is like without ever having been there.

Everywhere in the world there are different kinds of people- kind, ignorant, selfish, unhelpful, and ignorant. It does not matter what country you are in- you will find these types of attitudes. But to characterize a whole region and wrongly judge them because what is portrayed in the media is unfair.

I hope that Queen Rania's efforts will not go unnoticed and that we can begin to open our hearts and minds to learning and knowledge of one another's cultures.

June 6, 2008 | 7:48 AM Things are not what they seem
I think I know ONE of the reasons why such stereotypes evolved.

Media. Over the years, news of bombings, domestic violence, and warfare in the Arab world have been brought to everyone's attention.

But not the good news. Not their successes, innovations, contributions to art, science, society, and other positive insights that will allow the "bad news" to somehow level off.

The world is full both good and bad things. I appreciate Queen Rania's efforts to give the world a slight nudge as if to say, "We're just as normal as you are. Good things happen here too."

May she remind us to keep open minds and to start looking below the surface of things. Most times, if not always, things are not what they seem. ternpursuit Austin Jibunoh

June 16, 2008 | 5:06 AM more is needed
Some few Arabs hsve made some people believe that Arabs are violents and terrorists. They always believe that any war is a holy Jihad. We need more advocacy by the Arabs themselves. We need both the Christins and Muslims includung Hindus to come up with open forum tell the world on their stand. Then this stereostype will end. ojornal Tony Pent

am a muslim girl who participated in a cultural exchange with a danish group, we had an exchange experience of a full 10 days with ppl that we didnt meet them before we spent 24 hour together discussing issues like sterotypes, cartoon crisis, palistine issue, another riligious and political issues...this exchange came as a try of different ppl efforts to creat a space of communication between youth from the middle east and denmark after the cartoon crisis, of course at the begining each one of had his own sterotypes, and prejudgements espically that the issues we discussed couldnt be more sensetive even within the arab group themselves, thanks to the supervisors who put us all the 10 arabs and the 10 dans in situations that broke all the differences nd barriers between us within 2 days we mixed together and discovered that we have more in common than the differences we let the media, the actions of small programmed groups, in plant in us,,the exchange result were marvelous we discovered ourselves again, we shared the gift of listening even when we couldnt resist the critical and charged atmosphere sometimes but we did it bcoz each one of us wanted to know the right thing and differentiat,
,we became brothers and sisters even if we dont share the same opinions and backgrounds,,I recommined every person to put enough efforts in this issue and stop pointing fingers on each others and quit releasing accusations based on things we hear. Ramsha Ramsha Zia

well iv been fortunate enough to have actually lived in 2,3 middle eastern countries and can honestly say that those 5 years were extraordinary in the sense that i learned so much.
contrary to popular belief, NOT ALL ARABS ARE TERRORIST/SUICIDE BOMBERS
that would be like saying "all men are chauvenistic" or "all people of altrenative faith are against you"...whicch is all not true.

How can u possibly define an entire ethenicty, and enitre nation and so forth by the actions of the few who are disillusioned and on the wrong path? Isnt that equivalant to saying that just because HIV/AIDS is a problem in Africa, all people of that region are infected...

personally im sick and tired of all this close minded BS... we are supposed to be the most developed and advanced species on this planet and yet we fall prey to propaganda and what a media that is bought and controlled has to say to you. OPEN YOUR EYES and THINK FOR YOURSELF bjahjooh Belal jahjooh

July 5, 2008 | 11:09 AM Understanding Arabs
I believe the major stumbling block to understanding Arabs is that the Arabs (Moslems) that are encountered in the West by Westerners, invariably do not condemn, without reservation, the violent terrorists that are a tiny sector of Arab society.

There is no outright condemnation, but only that the slaughter of innocents is justified, for one reason or another. In fact, there is a clear pride in terrorist actions.

By attempting to justify, it then appears that the Arabs condone the extremists and agree with their sub-human behaviour.

This attempted justification is prevelant in every sector of Arab society, from the top to the kids on the street.

It is very clear that if you justify, 'Agree' with sub-human violence, whether it be blowing up buses of children in Israel, or trains of commuters in Spain, then the gross Arab society has to be labelled as violent and extremist.

The situation can only be changed, when a leading Arab statesman/s, can lead the Arab nation in to a categorical and complete rejection of terrorism, including against Israeli civilians, then the stereotype can be changed. ramziabdou ramzi abu abdou

July 20, 2008 | 2:59 PM Change The Syllabus Of Hate!
I would like to commend the efforts of Her Majesty Queen Rania, for all the Good things she has been doing,i have watched her as UN Ambassador in Morocco, helping to stop Child Labour, but here, this is another project, which in my Opinion, deals with One Of The Basic Fundamentals Of Our Existence,i am a Foreigner, that lives in a Muslim Country, and from a Beautiful Country,Divided Equally between Muslims And Christians,in my country,we do have little flare ups, mostly Political Charged Religious problems, like in almost every Religion,we have what the 'Saudis;call deviants, but for most of us,who have watched what has been happening in the World, for Five years now, people taking the laws into their hands, willing to kill or be killed for that which only them sees are just cause,so how does such impressions,or thougts get hold of such people,we should never pretend,or accept things that are not reconciable with known Human values, when such values, does not apply Universally,so lets look at the Mind Bending Academys in Muslim Countries And Other Countries, that twist the minds of little kids, and change their life, for bad,why would some people in our society, aquire only a particular knowledge and others and encouraged to pursue diverse knowledge that makes them employable and useful, any one,who does not have Knowledge of positive things,so shall the Fruit of that Person be,so lets start sincerely from our various societies, with all sincerity,if i cant kill my family member, why would i kill another,in the name of a 'Noble'cause!! well, that is a good initiative because i do not believe that all Arabs are terrorists. There is a need we separate the facts from the reality. I strongly opine that the good ones among them should endeavour to create more awareness on this issue. Rommel707 Rommel T. Brillantes
August 3, 2008 | 4:17 PM a terrorist or not a terrorist
Stereotyping the Arabs based on what the media shows before our eyes is but a picture of immaturity. People of the Earth we need to mature so that those toys in our hands would be gone.

I'm a media man in the other side. I say that because my program only caters good news. I feature anybody regardless of nationality, wheather it may be an Arab or not.

Queen Rania's idea is a matured idea. She's a mother of nation and fully understands the effect of stereotyping. I hope, this campaign will expand.

My country, Philippines, is divided into two major fear. From the Muslim's end in the southern Philippines, they say "beware of the Christians" and from the view point of the Christians in Luzon, they say "be ware of the Muslims". It pains my heart because of these attempt of stereotyping.

Media can form an image to the current generation. Perhaps Queen Rania put up her own TV station and Radio station if she can't convince the big world network to stop this news leading to stereopying any nation not only the Arabs.

To the Arab people... I respect you guys, we have the same color of blood, we are not different from each other. We should only open our eyes and willing to come to a higher view that we may see those craps behind us.

Terrorist are very few. They just happen to be Arabs, but they can't represent the whole of their nation.

YEs, we need a states man to lead these nation to totally abandon the idea of terrorism. No more bombings please, it is not necessary anymore. Let's get out of our holes and be peaceful! shbab2day Mahmuod Abbadi
